Initially established by Kate Petreny in 2021 as a retirement project, BeeLane Hives has since grown to more than 20 hives and produced in excess of 2,000 pounds of honey last year.
With degrees in Biology, Agriculture and Education, Kate is a lifelong learner and has been an active volunteer at the University of Guelph Honey Bee Research Centre (HBRC) for the last 4 years.
During her work with the HBRC team, she developed a passion for beekeeping and has had the opportunity to work with, and learned from, some of the most knowledgeable beekeepers in the country. Applying best management practices attained from practical work and educational sources, colony loss at BeeLane is extremely rare and significantly less than the provincial average and supports the sale of nucleus colonies to other local beekeepers.
Her attention to detailed management practices is also demonstrated in honey processing quality as BeeLane placed first in liquid honey show categories at the 2024 fall fairs in Milton, Aberfoyle and Erin and placed second at the 2024 Royal Winter Fair.
BeeLane is located on our family farm located just outside of Guelph and next to more than 2,000 acres of conversation and protected watershed land where our bees can forage in an undisturbed natural habitat. You can follow BeeLane on instagram @beelanehives or visit them at www.beelane.ca
